Cell Basics

All symbols and text written with EW Notator are enclosed in cells. Use the Simple Symbols window, the Compound Symbols bar, or the User Symbols bar to insert symbols into a cell. To insert text choose Type Text. You can align symbols or text to the right cell margin or to the cell's center by choosing alignment options in the Symbol Properties window.

In a staff a cell's format is defined by the intersection of a limb row and a column. Change the format using the Format Limbs window and the Column tab in the Cell Properties window.

Cells may be subdivided into smaller sections, optionally using solid or dotted lines. These splits may be orientated vertically or horizontally.

You can define the position of a vertical split by a percentage of the cell's width or place it right after a symbol. In the latter case the split's position will depend on the preceding symbol's width.

A horizontal split is placed above the preceding symbol and the split's position depends on the symbol's height, or it can alternatively be aligned according to a subdivision of the entire limb row.

Using subdivided rows enables you to put horizontal splits at the same position in more than one cell throughout a limb row:

You can change the formatting options of a split by choosing the Split Cell tab in the Cell Properties window.

Apart from staff cells you can insert a cell box into your document. This is a single cell inside a box that you can place anywhere on a page. Use cell boxes to place keys or short comments next to a staff.
