Text Basics

Two main approaches exist in EW Notator for writing text:

After choosing Simple Text you can insert text via the keyboard in the current cell in your staff or in a cell box. Simple text is quite useful for writing short comments, titles or explanations involving mixed EW Symbol and text input.

Simple text items are limited to a single line within a cell or a cell's horizontal split. Furthermore, simple text items will behave very much like EW Symbols (see Symbol Basics). You may apply size and alignment options from the Symbol Properties window. While you are editing a text item, a dotted frame will be displayed around it. You can create a separate text item by moving the cursor beyond the current item, until the dotted frame disappears. If you start typing again a new text item will be created.

The text font is determined by the paragraph style applied to the containing staff or cell box, and may be overriden by a character style applied to the simple text item. You can apply different character styles to different text items.

For creating multiline text passages or text involving multiple fonts and font styles, use a Text Box. You may place a text box within a cell or a cell box, or as a standalone free floating text box on your page. Also headers and footers are essentially text boxes, which are placed at the top or bottom of a page. In a text box, text formatting is mainly determined by the current paragraph style. Shorter text passages like single words may be formatted by character styles.
