Naming Limbs

Overview

Observe the following rules when giving names to limbs and limb groups in the Staff Dialog. You edit names by choosing the Edit Limb Name or Edit Group Name button from the dialog's toolbar.

• EW Notator relies on unique limb names within a staff definition.

  Therefore the program will not accept duplicate group names or duplicate limb names within one group. However you may have limbs under the same name in different groups (e.g. a limb called Foot in a Right Leg and Left Leg group). Also you may associate different performer names to several limb groups of the same name, and by that ensuring a unique group name definition.

• While editing limb names, all names you type will be stored in a list that you can access from a drop down list in the toolbar. Note that the words Right and Left will be removed from names stored in the list.

  When selecting a name from the list you can easily add Right or Left by clicking the appropriate button on the Button Bar.

• To ensure unique limb names it is not recommended to give abbreviated limb names. If you want to have an abbreviated name displayed in your document, define for that limb or group a name style (usually Short Names) using initials in the Format Limbs dialog. Then you can select this Name Style for your staffs. You can customize the default abbreviation that EW Notator provides with the Name List dialog.
• When you change limb names while modifying an existing staff (Edit Staff), previous cell contents are copied to the modified staff in the existing order of limb rows provided that you did not add or remove limbs.

  When adding or removing limbs or limb groups, symbols of the old staff will be copied to rows with the same limb name even if they appear at a different place in the staff.

  Therefore you should refrain from changing a staff's format and renaming limbs in one action. Information contained in the staff's cells could be lost. Instead you should choose the Edit Staff command twice.
