Format, Symbols, Build Symbols

Purpose

Use Build Symbols to create Compound Symbols that do not match any of the predefined symbol templates accessible through the Compound Symbols toolbar.

To re-use the created new symbol you can copy and paste it into the User Symbols bar or even add it to one of the symbol palettes of the Compound Symbols Window.

Steps

  1. Move the cursor to a symbol you want to build your new symbol from.
  2. Choose Symbol from the Format menu, then choose Build.
  3. Use the mouse or the arrow keys to move the focus in the View Symbol field to whichever item you want to edit or add to.
  4. To add a new item relative to the selected item,
    choose the Add Item tab, choose an item style and position, then choose Add.

    To delete a selected item,
    choose the Add Item tab, select the item in the preview control, then choose Delete.

    To add, change or delete parentheses, brackets or similar symbols enclosing your symbol,
    choose Parentheses / Brackets, select the desired orientation, then specify the enclosing symbol of your choice.

    To change the size, alignment and position of individual symbol items,
    choose the Size / Align tab, and change the desired properties.

    To edit the entire symbol using Symbol Script,
    choose Script.

  5. Repeat the actions of 3 and 4 as necessary.
  6. Choose OK.
